Ah, back to flooding my body with pork goodness. The things I do to my body for Yelp. Since many of the reviews here have mentioned the chicken and ribs combo, that's what I decided to get. The ribs were pretty good. The meat was basically falling off the bone. The sauce was sweet with a little kick to it. I liked this sauce compared to the other sauces that I've had in the Detroit area. There weren't any gimmicks, it was just decent bbq sauce. The chicken was also good. It wasn't dry at all and the skin had nice layer of char on it. If I were to grade this place on ribs and chicken alone, it would be close to 5 stars. However, there were some gross atrocities committed. The cole slaw was pretty bad. It was too liquidy and just did not taste good. The fries were meh and there wasn't enough sauce to dip the fries in. I also went with an extra order of potato salad. The odd thing about this place is that their pints of cole slaw and potato salad (when ordered separately) come in Chinese food containers. As for the potato salad itself, huge train wreck. It was essentially mashed potatoes with oil and mayo and some spring onion thrown in. What were they thinking? The service was good considering that this is a rib shack. The place looks like a converted Chinese takeout place. They have a lot of fried seafood options including clam strips and frog's legs. In the waiting area, they have a few arcade games including Pac Man. 50 cents for Pac man should be a crime. Even in its hey day, I don't think Pac Man was 50 cents. If you are looking for good ribs, you can't go wrong with this place. I will have to return to Slow's to see how their ribs compare since this place doesn't have brisket.

Absolutely amazing every time I've eaten there (I've been eating there for...23 years now?) Can't beat their ribs! My only regret about moving to Ferndale is that I'm far away from this place

This is hidden gem has been known to downriver residents for many years although it is only take out. The BBQ ribs are cut and prepared a certain way that makes the meat fall off the bones. The sauce is delicious as well. When we grab some take out, we normally get the BBQ rib dinner for 2 or the BBQ rib/chicken combo. Try the fish as well....very good. The staff is friendly but sometimes rushed because of constant traffic. All I can say is I am getting hungry from writing this review and I have not had ribs...errr....lunch yet. If you haven't been here, you won't be disappointed when you pick up your dinner.

I LOVE their short end rib, they are the best and I have tried many others. I was told their pizza it very good also but haven't tried it yet. Everything I order from there, I always go for the short end rib dinner. One time I'll have to order a small pizza to try it out!

This place has been a staple in community of Lincoln park for years, I had heard through word of mouth that this place was amazing and thought I'd give it a try. The menu has a array of things to choose from, like fish, shrimp, ribs, chicken, spaghetti, lasagna and even frog legs! They have their own signature bbq sauce, some would like to compare it to open pit, I'd beg to differ. The ribs are really tender and they fall right off of the bone, but they can be fatty! the bbq chicken is juicy though. The prices here are fairly reasonable, and you get a lot for your money, the coleslaw is a bit runny and they put your meat on top of your fries so like I bet other yelper has said, the fries are always soggy! The rib kabobs are a solid bet and I was really pleased with their taste. This isn't the best bbq joint I've eaten at, but it's definitely not the worst! If you're looking to feed yourself or your family and you don't have a ton of cash, this place is a safe bet! I'd recommend the rib kabobs or the smorgasbord, it's sort of like a sampler platter.

Instagram:@motorcitymunchers If you live around the Lincoln Park area in downriver you probably already know about Zukin's! I got the Zukin Smorgasbord which gives you ribs, southern fried chicken, fish, shrimp, coleslaw, fries, and a roll as part of their combo dinner $10 only Awesome place for some great comfort food

Used to order here all the time when I moved close by but the last few times we've ordered their pizza, it is so overloaded with cheese if you weren't lactose intolerant before, you would be now. Dough also seems undercooked even after requesting pizza to have less cheese, and well done. Haven't been back since.

Winner, winner, Zukin's dinner! While it's nowhere near where I work, many of my coworkers live Downriver therefore Zukin's is legendary. With the portions being generous and the menu prices being stuck in a time warp, we find ourselves often calling in for meals. The afternoon guy picks them up on his way into work and brings them in so we can eat a hot meal as we finish up the first shift. Ribs and rib tips are quite good. I can't explain it because yes, the sauce is a doctored version of Open Pit. However, it works. I particularly like their fried seafood options. On Friday's they have a basic perch dinner with fries, slaw and a dinner roll for under $5.00. The frog legs are good and meaty and well worth the $6.50. I like to order the 8 Mile dinner special that includes both shrimp and frog legs for $8.00. If I'm feeling particularly hungry I get the smorgasbord that includes ribs, fried chicken, shrimp, fish and the fries and slaw for $9.50. Lose the notion that Zukin's is like Ocean Prime. It's not and it doesn't try to be. Instead, they offer a decent meal at prices the working class can appreciate. Further, Zukin's always prints a BOGO coupon in the Downriver papers. BTW-If you want your fries to stay crispy, either poke holes in the carry out container or vent it to let the steam out. It's the difference between crispy and soggy every time.

Rib kabobs all the way! You can get the dinner (& yes, sometimes the fries are a little soggy), or just order as many kabobs as you want. The sauce is good, so order an extra. I have never had anything BUT the kabobs, but they are delicious. Counter girls can be a bit disinterested & surly, but they're teenagers, so I cut 'em some slack. Love them kabobs!

  • Bri D.

I decided to try this place based on the reviews on yelp and I was highly disappointed! I'm not sure what these reviewers are tasting but this bbq is absolutely disgusting! Just because you slather something in bbq sauce doesn't make it edible! My fries were soggy and tasted like dish soap... seriously. My ribs... yuck! Can't believe I spent money at this establishment. I was so displeased and vowed to never eat at this place again. You cannot pass this food off as bbq. You just can't do it! Ugh, I'm getting angry just thinking about it. Make a trip to Detroit and have ribs from Uptown BBQ. You'll Thank me.

I don't get it. At all. If you like mushy barbecue and soggy ass fries you will love it here. Smoke is not present but there is a nostalgia factor for me in the doctored up Open Pit, which strongly reminds me of neighborhood barbecues in my youth. I think my neighbor used to parboil his ribs too, which I think is the mistake they make here. The main taste you get from ribs here is BBQ sauce with quite a tangy kick. I will give them that the rib kabobs are very unique. The prices are a steal because the portions are ginormous. I'm just underwhelmed in the face of all the hype. I guess childhood memories can really shape what you love, if you don't have the acquired tastebuds you won't get it. For me? Meh.

Okay I been going here for 30 plus years. This place even used to be on the other side of Dix. I like the Friday perch dinner special and the rib kabobs. I always order those two dinners. Many fans like everything else on the menu. Sure you can get bigger fish dinners but these are only $5 when I order a dinner I always get the BBQ sauce put on my fries so as some people say they are soggy I would never know as that is the way I like them soggy with the BBQ sauce. The prices are great and the customer service isn't the owner himself has been a great guy for the 30 years I have known him and he has helped out many less fortunate families in the area. I will be back for sure. Sure you won't get that smoke flavor from this BBQ but the food has taste for sure.

Amazing. Been going for years pizza sauce on point. Top notch pizza. Ribs got a little bit of burn on them. Sooo good. Good selection of combos. The mrs orders cheese less pizza but its actually pretty good. Fries are good. Timeless good food. I think only thing really missing since I'm a big bread guy the dinner rolls are just average. I have nothing but good to say. Get the food. Do it.

I do not get Downriver much, but I love finding hidden gems like these. The place has NO seating - it is carry out and delivery only. The ribs and half chicken combo is solid-both were tender and juicy. Neither had any smoke in the flavor, but that is cool as the tangy BBQ sauce was FANtastic. They boxed the ribs and chicken together with the fries-why would you stack meat on top of the fries? The fries of course were soggy by the time I got home, so I did not bother with them and tossed them in the trash. The coleslaw looked overly creamy, so I did not bother with them either. The meat is why you are here and the prices are very reasonable.

  • Brooke J.

Absolute best ribs and chicken! This place looks a little shady, but the BBQ is amazing! Skip the coleslaw, my husband was unlucky and got some rancid stuff. The rotten slaw is the only reason I deducted a star. But that shows you how outstanding the ribs are! Had them cater a few parties as well. Always delicious and always a big hit with guests. Writing this is making me hungry! Yum!

  • Elizabeth V.

The pizza is ok. The BBQ is not great and the fries are always soggy. When I'm really hungry I can deal and eat the pizza except the customer service is horrible. My order had been wrong the last 4 times I order pizza and the staff are unapologetic.

  • Jennie B.

This place has the most AMAZING food ever! And what's even better is the price is right! Their Hawaiian chicken is probably the most amazing chicken I've ever had and I can say the same about their BBQ chicken because their sauce is a five star sauce. My son adores their chicken fingers and if your looking for a good appetizer their bosco sticks are the best. I also recommend their bucket of fish! You won't be sorry :)

Unpretentious. Good. Cheap. The guys at Park Tire Co. told me about this place, and I'm glad they did.

With 75 totally open after 2 years of construction, I can finally explore these "down river" places. My base for comparison of the ribs is: are they better than mine OR are they better than Slow's? My friends, Zukin makes mushy ribs. Yes, they fall off the bone and the meat is tender... but there's NO smoky flavor. Were these ribs steamed and then grilled? I have no idea. Where's the beautiful crust? Where's the smoke line?! Disappointing. The frog legs are a novelty item. V never had amphibian before so it was necessary as I've never seen them anywhere else in Detroit. I guess they were OK? Not an expert on frog legs! And finally, the catfish. I think Mariah C told me about it, and after doing autopsies for a few weeks -- the thought of eating ribs off the bone makes me a little queasy. The cornmeal breading was so flavorless and bland. Luckily, I had some of Big Al's Slapyamama seasoning on hand to give it some kick or flavor or something. I'm sure it hits a sentimental cord, but "meh" I've had better. PS - no indoor seating, strictly take out.

I almost hate to write this because I have always had good experiences with Zukins in the past and their potato salad is awesome. But 95 mins to receive cold food!? Not happy at all! I will not be ordering from there again.

It is a hole in the wall, but I love the rib kabobs. I would rather eat here than fancier, trendier barbecue places. Might not be everyones idea of barbecue but it sure is mine. Rib tips battered and fried with a squirt of barbecue sauce. Heaven on earth. This place has been in business since at least the 60s when it was known as "dial a dinner rib shack". People always comment on the similarity of their barbecue sauce to Open Pit. I do not see it. Zukins is much tastier. The only thing I find similar is that neither one is a super sweet sauce and I found out recently that Open Pit was actually created in the Detroit area in 1953, so there might be some long lost connection here. They bottle it and sell it over the counter if you love it like I do. It is great on about everything I have discovered. You can get good, not great, pizza here also. This is a carry out place only, so plan on eating in the car as you drive away as your mouth will be watering before you get them home.

  • Vince N.

If you like mushy overcooked ribs that fall off the bone and soggy fries, this is your place. The sauce is okay, it tastes like they doctor up Open-Pit. If you are looking for smoked meats, this is not your place. Hate the cole-slaw which is good, because after they put it in the carrout with the hot food, you have warm coleslaw. My guilty pleasure at this place is the Rib Kabobs, these alone bumped this review to 2 stars from 1.

  • James D.

i've eaten here about 100 times and i've only gotten the rib kabob dinner so i can't vouch for their other food but the RKD is so slammin. tender meat and the best sauce. my go-to meal if i plan on being downriver. the combo meals look cool too. kinda in a trashy area with nothing going on but it's worth it. take out only

What can I say? Best Ribs in Detroit! Period.

  • Chrissy J.

This place has the distinction of being the hands-down grossest place I've ever seen as far as food preparation goes. I haven't been in since the Michigan smoking ban, but I remember seeing cooks standing over the deep fryers with cigarettes in their mouths. All of their food is impossibly greasy, and all of that grease has flecks of...stuff in it. I have to assume that the only reason people eat here is because it's what their daddy gon' done, and their daddy's daddy, and their daddy's daddy's daddy. Either that or they want their ribs and their bottom-of-the-barrel strip clubs within a block of each other. Quantity, not quality, right?

I love zukin's. They have the best rib kabobs. And bucket of fish. I'm drooling thinking about it. Its fast and cheap.

Their pizza and rib kabob's are AMAZING!! We use to live near there but moved to Jackson and we drive there just to get these and take them home.

  • Tara T.

There are several redeeming things about Zukin's: 1. The sauce...it's good, could be spicier, but it's well-balanced and good 2. The portions. They are huge. 3. The place. Nostalgic, cool, unchanged by time. 4. The variety. They have chicken, ribs, fish, pizza, frog legs...what's not to love? They have good, roadside ribs. Nothing fancy. Just well-executed, basic, all-American food. The prices are great, too.

  • Jenn V.

The good: *The sauce.. yum!! *The portions are large *The meat DOES fall off the bones! *Prices are reasonable *Service is friendly and usually fast The meh: *With all of the open space they have in the front they should just put in a few tables. By the time I get home with my food (I live 13 mins away) the fries are soggy and worthless *Speaking of.. I don't know why they bother throwing in the fries, TINY cup of coleslaw and bun. They should have a 'ribs only' option. *Why no mac and cheese? Or cornbread? Or any of the other accompaniments to ribs? (They have deep fried mushrooms and onion rings.. but still... big lack of 'sides') Ultimately, yummy ribs for a good price. If you live close then they're worth grabbing ribs from, especially if you don't feel like making a drive (to say, Slow's) or spending a great deal of money (at say, Slow's)

Great sauce, tender ribs, and juicy chicken. I have been going to Zukins my entire life and I tend to stop by when I am back in town. I almost always get the chicken and ribs combo, no coleslaw extra fries instead (they have always complied with this request). The coleslaw is not very good, but I generally only like coleslaw made from my grandma's recipe. So it might just be me. The sauce is my favorite part of this place. I will order some extra sauce on the side for fry dipping. It is somewhat sweet but brings some heat to it. I love sweet and hot sauces and Zukins has the perfect balance between the two. I almost always get my food as takeout and the only problem with that is the fries sometimes get soggy from being sealed in the cardboard container underneath the chicken and ribs. This is not ideal, but you could dip the cardboard container into the sauce and it would be edible. If you are ever in northern downriver and want some ribs and chicken, then this is the place.

  • Therle D.

This is a new experience for me. I ordered Zukin's delivery, and ordered two Open Pit Specials. What I got was a whole chicken and a whole rack of ribs, a bed of fries, biscuits and slaw for $17.45 plus a $2 delivery fee. It served three, and there were leftovers (but not for long!). I'm normally very picky with my rib meat, don't like the texture of fatty foods, and just tend to peck at ribs, but these I just couldn't put down! They fell off the bone, and were so lean and tender, with a sauce that was so rich and juicy, I was literally sucking the taste off the bone. I would recommend Zukin's to anyone who loves good grill taste and fast service, and I will definitely be ordering again and again.

Never had anything but rib kabobs. But there are delicious. Get extra BBQ sauce

Great ribs! When I'm driving by the big tire on 94, two places call my name: Sylvia's Subs and Zukins Rib Shack. The ribs are great and the fries are a freak of nature. They're always smashed and pretty soggy...yet they taste amazing. The fact that there are always people hanging outside Zukins smoking cigs only adds to the ambiance. If I smoked I'm sure I'd like to enjoy a cigarette while enjoying the aromas provided by Zukins Rib Shack.

  • Cheryl C.

Why couldn't Zukin's become a franchise and expand to other cities and states? I am a former resident of Lincoln Park who absolutely loves the BBQ ribs. Unfortunately, there is NOTHING in the Hollywood, FL area that compares! The closest I have found is at Scruby's in Pembroke Pines and at Smokey Bones in Davie. In my opinion, the owners of Zukin's have made a huge mistake by not making their ribs available to diners everywhere.

  • Barry C.

Excellent ribs and chicken. One of the few places around where you can find frog's legs on the menu, and cooked to perfection as well. I wish they would take a tip from their neighbor, Pancho's, and open some more locations in the area.

  • Eric S.

Rib kabob dinner is delicious! Ask for extra sauce to use for dipping your fries in.

  • Andrew B.

The ribs are good and overall the place wasn't that bad. They do take out only. You get a hearty portion of food for the price and tastes...ok.

We moved 6 years ago to another town and we long for these ribs no matter long end or short end they are the best......too bad they do not provide tables so we could eat in -I'm pretty sure Diners,Drive-ins and Dives would be there to showcase these ribs
